The pathogenic SARS-CoV-2 viru­­s enters human target cells via its viral transmembrane spike (S) glycoprotein. Invasion Mechanism of Coronavirus

Several recent studies have pointed out that the spike protein of coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) binds to Angiotensin-converting Enzyme 2 (ACE2)* on the surface of human cells. ACE2 is mainly expressed on the cell surface of the upper respiratory tract bronchus, which is activated by the action of Transmembrane Protease, Serine 2 (TMPRSS2).

*ACE2 is mainly concentrated in the branches of the accessory lobules and bronchus, where some of the precursor cells that are not fully differentiated.
