Antidepressant activity The study shows that 5% clary sage had a strong antidepressant activity. Thus, clary sage may be developed as a therapeutic agent which reduces the required medication doses in patients with depression. Forced swim test was used to test the antidepressant activity. The shorter the immobility time, the better the antidepressant activity in the test. (The immobility time was defined as the sum of the times during which a rat ceased swimming or climbing, rather floating in the water, performing the minimum amount of anterior extremity movement, simply to maintain the head above the water surface.) The duration of immobility during a 5-min period after inhalation of clary sage is decreased by at least 50% compared with the controlled for 1, 2, 4 and6 h. Inhalation of clary sage effectively reduced immobility in the test, thus clary sage performs good antidepressant activity. Source: Seol, G. H., Shim, H. S., Kim, P. J., Moon, H. K., Lee, K. The duration of pain decreased by 0.63 days after assigned a blended essential oil. The 10-point numeric rating scales (from no pain (0) to worst pain (10)) before applying the blended essential oil message was 6.83 on the 1st day and 2.71 on the 3rd day of the menstrual period. The 10-point numeric scales after applying the blended essential oil message was 3.92 on the first day and 1.33 on the 3rd day of the menstrual period. Source: Ou, M. C., Hsu, T. F., Lai, A. Clary sage essential oil damaged the cell membrane and changed the cell membrane permeability, leading to the release of the material inside the cell such as macromolecular substances, ATP and DNA and resulting strong antimicrobial activity.
