Eucalyptus Eucalyptus is mostly used due to its medicinal properties. It is an evergreen tree that's of Australia native, over 500 species have been indigenous to Australian and bordering islands of polynesia but can now be found in other parts of the world. The essential oil of Eucalyptus has some important health functions beneficial to human beings. The Eucalyptus have different species; E. maiden, E. astrengens, E. cinerea, E. leucoxylon, E. lehmani, E. sideroxylon and E. bicostata. All essential oils contain α-pinene, 1,8-cineol and pinocarveol-trans were found in all Eucalyptus species studied with the 1,8-cineol as the major compound in all species and it was the highest in E. maideni with 83.59%. Important health benefits of Eucalyptus Immune system enhancement In a study carried out to investigate whether the Eucalyptus oil (EO) can affect the ability of human monocyte-derived macrophages (MDMs) in vitro and in rat peripheral blood monocytes/granulocytes in vivo in the absence or presence of immunosuppression induced by the chemotherapeutic agent 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). The results showed that EO can implement the innate cell-mediated response and increased phagocytic activity of the granulocytic/monocytic system. Immune response A study evaluated the effectiveness of Eucalyptus leaf powder (ELP) and Eucalyptus essential oils (EEO) on the immune system and growth performance of broilers chicken. The study included a total number of 160 broiler chicken randomly selected into five (5) different groups and treated for 42 days. The results showed that EEO has the potential to enhance the immune response in broilers chicken. Anti-inflammatory response A study investigated the anti-inflammatory effectiveness and infection response in the lungs microphage of Eucalyptus oil (EO) and its dominant constituent 1,8–cineole (eucalyptol). The pro-inflammatory mediators are significantly reduced after pretreatment with EO. The results showed that the anti-inflammatory activity of EO and 1,8-cineole is regulated through the selective downregulation of the PRR pathways The antibacterial effect in respiratory tract infection In a study carried out to show the antibacterial activity of Eucalyptus globulus leaf extract and was tested against isolated Staphylococcus aureus (56), Isolated Streptococcus pyogenes (25), Isolated Streptococcus pneumoniae (12), and Haemophilus influenzae (7) gotten from 200 clinical specimens of patients with respiratory tract disorders. The results showed a possible therapeutic role of Eucalyptus globulus leaf in the treatment of respiratory infection, but more studies are needed to ascertain this effect. Antibacterial effect Antibiotics resistance is a threat to the general public, an attempt to search for a new effective antimicrobial agent was made, and a study was carried out on the effectiveness of Eucalyptus against clinical Gram-positive and Gram-negative clinical bacterial isolates. The results showed that a potent broad-spectrum antibacterial agent could be produced using Eucalyptus globulus leaves.. Antiviral and antibacterial A study was carried out to evaluate the antibacterial and antiviral activities of Eucalyptus against isolates of Streptococcuspyogenes (120), isolates of S. pneumoniae (20), isolates of S. agalactiae (40), isolates of Staphylococcus aureus (20), isolates of Haemophilus influenzae (40), isolates of H. parainfluenzae (30), isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae (10), isolates of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (10), and two viruses; a strain of adenovirus and mumps virus. The results showed that Eucalyptus has both antibacterial and antiviral activities. Effects of Eucalyptus on diabetes In a study to evaluate the effects of eucalyptus on streptozotocin (STZ)-induced damage in pancreatic islands. 50 mature normoglycemic male Wistar rats were selected and allocated randomly into 5 groups and treated for 4 weeks. The results showed that Eucalyptus ameliorates the state of diabetes by restoring the pancreatic beta cells partially and by repairing the damage that resulted in rats by STZ-induced. Pain relievers A study was carried out to determine how Eucalyptus essential oil affect pain pathways. The study showed that Eucalyptus essential oil has the potential to relieve somatic, inflammatory, and visceral pain. To determine the effectiveness of Eucalyptus oils in pain reduction and inflammatory responses resulting after total knee replacement. A study was carried out and participants were randomized equally into an intervention group treated with Eucalyptus and a control group treated with almond oil. Each group was treated for 30 mins for three days consecutively. The results showed that Eucalyptus oil was effective in reducing the pain and blood pressure of patients following total knee removal.
