Vetiver Vetiveria zizanioides (VZ) (family: Poaceae), an aromatic plant widely known as “Vetiver”. It has been used for various ailments over the years. This piece will identify the health benefits of Vetiveria zizanioides with researchers work done in the past. Hypolipidemic effect A study evaluated the hypolipidemic effect of Vetiveria zizanioides Oil in High Fat Diet (HFD) induced Wistar Albino rat model. Thirty rats were divided equally into 5 groups and were treated accordingly: Normal Diet Control, High Fat Diet Control, with Low dose Vetiver Oil (VO), with High dose VO, with Simvastatin for 8 weeks. The study demonstrated that Vetiveria zizanioides is capable of hypolipidemic activity in HFD induced rats. The anxiolytic and memory enhancing properties The anxiolytic and memory enhancing activity of ethanolic extract of V. zizanioides (EEVZ) dried roots were examined in a study carried out using mice. The mice were treated with different dosage of the EEVZ before evaluating the effects. The essential oil of V. zizanioides possesses significant anxiolytic and nootropic activity due to the possibly interplaying with neurotransmitters implicated in anxiety and learning and memory. Anti-proliferative activity A study investigated the biological activity of Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides) essential oil (VEO) in a pre-inflamed human dermal fibroblast model. The impact of VEO was analyzed on the levels of 17 important protein biomarkers important to immune response and tissue remodeling. VEO exhibited strong anti-proliferative activity in these cells and significantly inhibited the production of collagen III, an important molecule for skin and tissue remodeling processes. Refreshing properties on brain activities A study was carried out for the quantifiable and reproducible effects of Vetiveria zizanioides essential oil on sleep-waking and electroencephalogram (EEG) patterns in adult male Wistar rats. The rats were treated with Vetiveria zizanioides essential oil in the experimental group and water in the control group while the EEG recording was done. The essential oil of vetiver has refreshing properties on electrical brain activity and alertness by inhalation significantly increased total waking and reduced slow-wave sleep time. Antioxidant activity and anti-inflammatory activity Vetiveria zizanioides (VZ-EO) major components such as cedr-8-en-13-ol, α-amorphene, β-vatirenene and α-gurjunene were assessed for the suppression of the inflammatory responses of LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages, nitric oxide production and cell apoptosis, by regulating the expression of the inflammation-related enzymes heme oxygenase-1, inducible nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase-2 (inducible cyclooxygenase) and the inflammatory cytokines tumour necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1β and interferon-β. The study identified that the anti-inflammatory activity of VZ-EO correlated with its antioxidant activity. References Chou, Su-Tze & Lai, Chia-Pei & Lin, Chih-Chien & Shih, Ying. (2012).
