Spearmint Spearmint also referred to by many as Mentha spicata is an important source of essential oils used in aromatherapy. The essential oils of spearmint has many important health benefits ranging from relieving itching, act as antispasmodic, treat flatulence, to refresh muscular and headache pain, and so many more. Effective in treating flatulence In a study on Mentha spicata, it was identified that peppermint is a cool, and spicy plant with astringent and digestive properties used in the treatment of flatulence. It has a main component of carvone, which demonstrated potency for treatment of flatulence related to indigestion, cesarean section, and dysmenorrhea. Also, it can reduce the pain severity during the colonoscopy or dysmenorrheal conditions with no reported hazardous effects. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and overweight diseases The quantity and composition of EO from M. spicata was analyzed seasonally over three years. The study identified M. spicata to have inhibitory activities against the principal enzymes associated with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and overweight diseases (cholinesterase and porcine pancreatic lipase). Therefore, M. spicata can be used in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and overweight diseases. Antimicrobial activities The analysis of M. spicata contents was done seasonally over three years. The study demonstrated that M. spicata has strong antidermatophytic activity against Microsporum canis, Trichophyton rubrum, T. mentagrophytes, and Epidermophyton floccosum. In addition to the significant inhibitory activity against biofilm formation of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), M. spicata EO and carvone had a strong inhibitory effect on metabolic activity and biomass of the preformed biofilm. In another study carried out on the different types of essential oil that have anti-dermatophytosis properties, M. spicata was identified as one of the most effective plants against dermatophytes attacking keratinized tissues, such as nail, hair, and stratum corneum, due of their gravitation towards keratin, causing dermatophytosis. Improves agility A study evaluated if the nootropic effects of proprietary spearmint extract (PSE) translate into changes in reactive agility. A total number of 142 recreationally-active men and women were included in the study, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, and treated for 90 days with PSE. The findings of the current study demonstrate that the treatment with PSE improved specific measures of reactive agility (number of hits and average reaction time (ART)) in a young, active population. Analgesic effect The analgesic effect of spearmint was demonstrated in a study that included osteoarthritis, as the major cause of chronic musculoskeletal in 45 years old and above. The analgesic effects of spearmint were confirmed after evaluating different articles from different databases (PubMed, Science Direct, Wiley, Taylor & Francis, and Springer) on the analgesic effects of M. spicata. Also, it was identified that it is safe and efficient in treating the pain associated with osteoarthritis. References Mohaddese, Mahboubi. (2016).
