Rose oil Aromatherapy makes use of essential oil to provide comfort to the body. The effects of essential oil on the body goes beyond comfort, essential oils have some health benefits. The following are the health benefits of Rose oil; Relaxing effects A study was carried out to investigate the effect of rose oil on human autonomic parameters and emotional responses in healthy subjects. Breathing masks were used to exclude any olfactory stimulation and the inhalation of the fragrances. Forty volunteers were included and divided into two groups in the study, and assessed for autonomic parameters and emotional responses. In comparison to the placebo group, the experimental group showed significant decreases in breathing rate, blood oxygen saturation, and systolic blood pressure, which indicate a decrease in autonomic arousal. Also, they showed calmer, more relaxed, and less alert than subjects in the control group. The study concluded that rose oil has relaxing effects on the body. Pharmacological properties A study reviews the therapeutic effects of rose oil that had been clinically evaluated in trial studies. The study searched for human studies that have evaluated the therapeutic effects of rose oil and published in the English language until August 2015 on Google scholar, PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Scopus. A total number of thirteen studies were included in the search. Most of the studies (five trials) evaluated the analgesic effect of rose oil. Five studies evaluated the physiological relaxation effect of rose oil; anti-depressant, psychological relaxation, improving sexual dysfunction, and anti-anxiety effects all reported for rose oil. The study observed that rose oil had physiological and psychological relaxation, analgesic, and anti-anxiety effects. More studies are required to conclude on the efficacy and safety of rose oil.
