Geranium It is one of the essential oils used in aromatherapy, and it can either be used independently or in combination with other essential oils to exert its effects. There are some health benefits of geranium, and will be discussed with important research studies; Effects on depression A study aimed at determining the effect of aromatherapy massage on depression in menopausal women was carried out among 120 menopausal women. They were divided into three groups; control, aromatherapy massage, and massage group, and treated for 8 weeks with 2% geranium in almond oil with the exception of the control group. The depression rate was assessed before and after the treatment and results showed that geranium oil was effective in reducing the symptoms of depression. Therapeutic effects In a study to evaluate the preserving and therapeutic abilities of Pelargonium graveolens (geranium), studies were included based on findings from different benefits of pelargonium. The benefits reviewed are on the antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-fungal activities of pelargonium. The study concluded that pelargonium demonstrated antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-fungal activities. Anti-inflammatory effects In a study that evaluated the anti-inflammatory activities of geranium essential oil. Gas chromatography was used to investigate the chemical composition of the essential oil. The major components were citronellol, geraniol, and citronellyl formate with 29.13%, geraniol 12.62%, and 8.06% respectively. Five groups of carrageenan-induced paw edema were established and treated with rose geranium. The results showed that RGEO is likely to significantly have the potential for the development of novel anti-inflammatory drugs with improved safety profiles. Antimicrobial effects In a study to determine the antimicrobial effect of five essential oils of which geranium is among, the results showed that geranium was effective in inhibiting bacterial growth, most especially C. Albicans. Effective in reducing anxiety In a study to evaluate the effectiveness of the aroma of geranium essential oil on anxiety level and physiological parameters of nulliparous women in the first stage of labor. A total of hundred (100) nulliparous women were selected and randomly allocated into two groups; the intervention (geranium) and control (placebo) groups. Geranium was effective in reducing the anxiety of women in labor. Stress relief In a study to verify the effectiveness of geranium essential oils associated with massage for stress relief in a controlled and randomized clinical trial performed among nursing staff of the surgical center through evaluation of bio-physiological and psychological parameters. At the beginning and after the intervention, the Work Stress Scale (WSS) and the List of Stress Symptoms (LSS) were used. The use of geranium essential oils is significantly effective in lowering bio-physiological parameters. References Seoul-Hee, N., Mi-Sook, C and Young-Soon, C., (2018).
